With passion for child development
At St. John’s, our program is designed to meet the developmental needs of the young child.
It provides experiences that enrich and enhance each child’s spiritual, cognitive, language, social, emotional, physical and creative development. At St. John’s, children learn by doing: through their activities and play and through discoveries on their own.
Our Philosophy
We believe that playful experiences with materials, objects, other children, and caring adults help children develop physically, emotionally, cognitively, and socially. We work to instill a love of learning in each child, as we believe all children can learn.
The use of thematic units and centers encourages development of the whole child – socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively. We create a stimulating environment so that children may develop a love of learning; we offer activities that will enable each child to experience success; we try to encourage children to be creative and to appreciate that quality in others. The children are taught to interact with one another courteously and considerately.
The children at St. John’s Preschool are treated with respect and are encouraged to treat others that way. We teach the children to discuss their problems and frustrations with their friends and encourage them to work together on finding a solution. Because we see discipline as a teaching opportunity, we focus on teaching them what to do to get along, rather than punishing them for what they should not do.
Daily Schedule
Within the school’s daily schedule, each child has opportunities to create, explore the environment, learn problem-solving and personal interaction skills and learn concepts through first-hand experiences. Children develop positive self-concept through a balance of self- and teacher-directed activities. Solitary, parallel and cooperative plays as well as group activities are offered throughout each day. Teachers serve as positive role models and provide care that is loving, supportive, nurturing, warm and responsive to each child’s individual needs. Our activities are designed to balance active and quiet play throughout the day. Our playground enables energetic outdoor playtime. When weather doesn’t permit outside play, we have a gymnasium equipped to meet the needs of energetic children.
Celebrations
We celebrate birthdays as well as holidays! Birthdays are always important celebrations. Most celebrations are conducted in each class. In November, the Preschool hosts a Thanksgiving Feast. This has become a wonderful tradition for all of the preschool families! A special program by the 3 and 4 year-old classes is video worthy.
